The Environmental Science & Technology Centre (ESTC)
manages research and development and related scientific programs
for environmental protection related to risk assessment, risk management,
environmental emergencies, enforcement and compliance testing programs,
and contributes to advancing science, technology and innovation. Areas of
specialization include ambient air quality monitoring and toxics research;
developing, validating and/or applying biological and chemical analytical
and regulatory reference methods in diverse samples; developing reference methods,
characterizing emissions and compliance testing for stationary and mobile emissions;
researching and providing advice on properties, fate, behaviour, effects and treatment
of spilled hazardous materials; development, validation and application of countermeasures
for spills, contaminated sites and terrorist incidents; soil biotechnology fate and effect
assessment; and green technology. Most programs are carried out in collaboration with other
government departments, academic institutions, and companies in Canada and abroad.
