April 12     New employees get the message

April 12, 2005 – Sacramento, California – More than 700 new Forest Service employees heard the Fiddlin’ Foresters messages at the national New Employees Orientation, at the Sacramento Convention Center.  For the third consecutive year the Fiddlin’ Foresters sang of history, future challenges and proud traditions of the agency.

The New Employee Orientation provides a great opportunity for new employees from around the country to learn about the history of the agency and conservation, look to their career future and network with program managers and leaders from across the country,” said Orientation coordinator Jan Britt of the Southern Region.  “It is a value resource for these employees and the agency.  It is exciting to see so many new faces and experience the excitement of the gathering”

At the evening Expo, a trade show of Forest Service programs and resources, several employees joined the Fiddlin’ Foresters for a fun-filled hoedown and jam session.  The Expo provides new employees opportunities to talk to representatives from many Forest Service programs such as National Fire Plan, New Century of Service, Law Enforcement,  Regional Foresters from several regions, State and Private Forestry, Job Corp, and more.

The Fiddlin’ Foresters received a gratifying comment from one employee who said, “I learned more about the Forest Service from your one-hour presentation than I have learned in the four years I have worked for the agency.”

“It’s comments like that that keep us going,” said Jane Leche.  “ We have objectives of getting across conservation messages and enhancing employee morale.  We know we are succeeding when we get that kind of feedback.”
The 2006 New Employee Orientation will be held in Jacksonville, Florida next April, and the Fiddlin’ Foresters hope to be there.
