How to Contact Our Office
The following guidance is provided to ensure correspondence is directed
to the appropriate Federal Election Commission Division.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) Office of Inspector General (OIG),
was created as a result of a 1988 amendment to the Inspector General Act of
1978. The FEC OIG was established to provide oversight of the internal operations
of the FEC, to include the following:
- Conduct and supervise independent and objective audits and investigations
relating to agency programs and operations.
- Promote economy, effectiveness and efficiency within the agency.
- Prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse in agency programs and operations.
Examples of OIG Audit and Investigative Responsibilities:
- Audit of the FEC’s cash management
- Audit of the FEC’s revenue collection process
- Investigation of an FEC employee suspected of fraud
- Investigation of a FEC contractor suspected of bribery
Examples of Non-OIG Responsibilities:
- Investigation of a possible violation of the Federal Election Campaign
Act (Office of the General
Counsel)
- Federal campaign finance statistics (Press
Office)
- Audit of a candidate committee for a Federal elected office (Audit
Division)
- Resource of information on matters involving the administration of Federal
elections, such as election fraud, voting system standards, and voter registration
