Scientists use NSIDC DAAC data to track declining summer Arctic sea ice

NSIDC produces the Sea Ice Index, deriving data from the Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SSMR and DMSP SSM/I Passive Microwave Data and the Near Real-Time SSM/I Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations. These data provide sea ice extent, concentration, and ice edge, as well as trends and anomalies.

In addition, composite imagery from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides optical views of the 2007 Arctic sea ice minimum.

For more information, or to read about the record low 2007 Arctic summer sea ice extent, visit NSIDC's Arctic Sea Ice News Fall 2007 Wep page. For more information about the sea ice data used, visit NSIDC's Sea Ice Index Web site.

CALIPSO data products now publicly available

The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite mission is pleased to announce an initial release of its data products. CALIPSO provides new insight into the role that clouds and atmospheric aerosols (airborne particles) play in regulating Earth’s weather, climate, and air quality. CALIPSO is a joint mission between NASA and Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the French space agency.

The CALIPSO payload includes an active lidar Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), an active lidar, as well as a passive Infrared Imaging Radiometer (IIR), and a visible Wide Field Camera (WFC). This data release consists of data beginning in mid June 2006 and includes Level 1 radiances from each of the instruments. This release also includes the lidar Level 2 vertical feature mask and cloud and aerosol layer products.

For more information or to access the data, visit the NASA Langley Atmospheric Science Data Center (LaRC) DAAC CALIPSO Data Sets Web page.

HDF and HDF-EOS Workshop X

Landover, Maryland
November 28-30, 2006

Our theme, "How may we help you?" is an invitation to the data user community. We want to hear your complaints and suggestions. We are holding a special 2-hour forum on the last day addressing the need for a Common Data Model.

Are you having problems integrating HDF and HDF-EOS data into your workflows? Do you wish to have data converted to a format that you are familiar with? Do you need tools to help you with your work?

Data users, this is your chance to influence future developments!

Tour of the Cryosphere DVD Cover

Introducing a New DVD:
A Tour of the Cryosphere, Earth's Frozen Assets

The cryosphere has a global reach, extending beyond the polar regions. It consists of those parts of the Earth's surface where water is found in solid form, including areas of snow, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, ice sheets, and icebergs. NASA Earth Observing satellites are providing scientists with unparalleled insight into how the cryosphere behaves, how it is changing, and what implications those changes have on the Earth's global systems, including weather and climate. This 8 minute feature animation takes the viewer on a tour of the cryosphere as it exists around the world. From shrinking Arctic sea ice, to retreating glaciers and collapsing Antarctic ice shelves, this unique global view of cryospheric research is shown with state-of-the-art Earth observing satellite data animations.
Visit NASA's Life on Earth Web site for more information about the DVD.
