Functional Data Analysis: Statistics for Curves and Images

James Ramsey
McGill University, Canada

We see more and more data in the form of relatively complete records of something changing with time, with space, or both. Examples are heights of growing children, changes in weather, brain images, pollution levels, and etc. This is a fascinating new area for statisticians, who must adapt traditional modeling and hypothesis testing technology to samples of curves and images. This talk will provide a snapshot of some functional data analysis problems and solutions, and illustrate the area with some results on human growth and handwriting.
