Alcohol-Related Public Health Objectives and Guidelines

Healthy People 2010 highlights the major health priorities for our Nation and serves as a guide to increase the quality and years of healthy living and to eliminate health disparities. One specific goal is to reduce substance abuse to protect the health, safety, and quality of life for all, especially children. This goal includes several objectives such as reducing alcohol-related motor vehicle crash deaths and injuries, reducing cirrhosis deaths, reducing binge drinking, and increasing treatment for substance abuse.

Chronic Disease Indicators
The Chronic Disease Indicators is a comprehensive set of 92 public health measures intended to increase the quality and availability of surveillance data on chronic disease and health risk behaviors at the state and federal levels. Public health professionals can use these indicators to improve surveillance and help develop effective intervention programs.

U.S. Dietary Guidelines (from www.health.gov)
The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is intended to be the primary source of dietary health information. The guidelines provide information and advice for a healthy diet. Chapter 9 in the guidelines refers to recommendations on the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
