Training Institutes

The following Federal or State supported organizations assist the forensic community with training and technical assistance.

Marshal University Forensic Science Center

The Marshall University Forensic Science Center (MUFSC) provides training sessions, on a continuing basis, that encompass the entire process of DNA extraction and analysis for human identification, including modules on Automation and Expert Systems. National Center for Forensic Science

The National Center for Forensic Science provides research, education, training, tools and technology to meet the current and future needs of the forensic science, investigative and criminal justice communities. Hosted at the University of Central Florida, NCFS is a member of the National Institute of Justice sponsored Forensic Resource Network.

Midwest Forensic Resource Center

The Center is a support and research facility in the Ames Laboratory on the Iowa State University campus providing:

  • A program to identify and provide access to university and laboratory resources for use in casework
  • A regional focal point for the production and provision of innovative training and education
  • A collaborative network for Midwestern forensic science educators
  • A center for advanced research and development in forensic science
  • A development center to advance innovative technology and management practices in crime laboratories
California Science Forensic Institute

The California Forensic Science Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving public safety through the advancement of forensic science. As the academic, research, in-service training, and public education arm of the Los Angeles Regional Crime Laboratory (LARCL), they seek to bridge the gap between novel scientific technology and its application in the crime laboratory, as well as meet the growing demand for trained forensic experts.

Northeast Regional Forensic Institute

The Northeast Regional Forensic Institute's (NERFI) and the DNA Academy at the University at Albany provides superior graduate and continuing education for practicing forensic scientists. Scientists already at work in the field may also attend single units of the DNA Academy for Professional Development Credit. See NERFI's opportunities for Professional Development. NERFI is a collaboration with the University at Albany's Office for Research, and the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center and was funded in part through an award from the National Institute of Justice.
