An alternative approach has been developed for the analysis of the 13 Short Tandem Repeat (STR) markers currently used for analyzing biological evidence. The "mini-STR" approach allows STR testing to be performed on small fragments of DNA and is especially applicable to degraded DNA evidence, such as that recovered following mass disasters and discovered anthropological remains. The mini-STR method was successfully used to assist with the World Trade Center DNA effort. This research seeks to improve our ability to obtain STR information from degraded biological samples.
