Expert Panel Report

The Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM) convened an expert panel meeting on January 11-12, 2005 to consider four in vitro test methods for measuring eye irritancy. The test methods included:

  • The Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability [BCOP] assay
  • The Hen's Egg Test-Chorioallantoic Membrane [HET-CAM] assay
  • The Isolated Chicken Eye [ICE] assay
  • The Isolated Rabbit Eye [IRE] assay

The NTP Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM) organized the 24-member international panel in collaboration with the ICCVAM and the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM). The meeting was held in response to a request by the U.S. EPA for ICCVAM to evaluate the usefulness and limitations of in vitro ocular safety testing methods. The Panel's conclusions and recommendations are contained in the Expert Panel Report published in March 2005.

The Panel reconvened for a teleconference in September 2005 to consider additional data and information. An Addendum to the Expert Panel Report, covering discussions at the September 2005 teleconference, was published in November 2005
