EDG Search and Order Tips for TES Data Products |
This page provides a few tips for searching and ordering TES data through the EOS Data Gateway (EDG).
TES began making measurements on August 22, 2004. The routine TES observation mode is to produce global survey standard products spanning 16 orbits on a 50% duty cycle, or approximately every other day. The "off" days can be used for special observations such as intensive campaigns to observe volcanic eruptions, biomass burning, and pollution events.
The table below illustrates the TES Level 1B file naming conventions.
ESDT Short Name | File Name | Product |
---|---|---|
TL1BN | TES-Aura_L1B-Nadir_FPfp_rrun id-oorbit number_version id.h5 | Standard |
TL1BSOL | TES-Aura_L1B-SO-Low_FPfp_rrun id-oorbit number_version id.h5 | Special Observation/Low Resolution |
TL1BSOH | TES-Aura_L1B-SO-High_FPfp_rrun id-oorbit number_version id.h5 | Special Observation/High Resolution |
The EDG search results list displays the internal granule ID, e.g., a string like SC:TL1BN.001:10437634, rather than the file names, for TES Level 1B data, so the information that is contained in the file name is not visible in the list of data granules returned by an EDG search. Please see the tips in the Searching section below to see how to determine the file version id for TES Level 1B data.
The tables below illustrates the TES Level 2 file naming conventions.
ESDT Short Name | File Name |
---|---|
TL2CH4N | TES-Aura_L2-CH4-Nadir_rrun id_version id.he5 |
TL2CON | TES-Aura_L2-CO-Nadir_rrun id_version id.he5 |

TL2ATMTN | TES-Aura_L2-ATM-TEMP-Nadir_rrun id_version id.he5 |
TL2ANC | TES-Aura_L2-ANCILLARY_rrun id_version id.he5 |
ESDT Short Name | File Name |

To ensure that your order processes successfully, we request that you be aware of the total size of your order. Please use the following guidelines:
Note: Please read the alert message board highlighted in yellow on the EDG Home Page. This board provides important messages from the Data Centers (i.e., system maintenance downtimes, when ordering will be unavailable).
You have successfully entered the EDG and are ready to set up a search.
Create Search.
Enter TES/Aura in the "Text Search" field to select all TES data sets (and edit the resulting list if desired), or
Select "DATA SET" in the category scrolling list in that section and select "Choose Keywords for >>", then choose the desired TES data sets from the lists presented
If you are interested in a particular version of the data, you can specify that by selecting "Product Generation Algorithm" in the category scrolling list and select "Choose Keywords for >>". Then enter the PGE version information (available from the TES Data Versioning table). Another way to check the version is to customize the results lists returned by a search. Near the top of the results page is a link labeled "Customize this table". On the subsequent page, add PGEVERSION to the Current Columns list and that field will be shown for the search results files. Use the TES Data Versioning table to match the PGE version to the file version.
If you wish to narrow your search by date, select "Choose a Date/Time Range".
Both the Level 1 and Level 2 TES granules have a specified geographic range of global (latitude 90S to 90N, longitude 180W to 180E). Specifying a "Search Area" will not be of benefit since all granules will match any specified search area, and, in fact, this will cause the search to fail.
Depending on the system load, it may take some time for the search to complete. When results are returned, you are ready to place an order. A granule consists of a data file (or files) and the associated metadata file.
An e-mail receipt will be sent to the address specified in the order form.
* If this is your first order for a particular data set and version, a Data Quality Summary page will be displayed with links to the Quality Summary information for each TES data product. Selecting the product link will bring up a general EDG Data Quality Statements page. To view the TES Quality Statements, select the TES link and then on the appropriate Quality link(s). From this point, you will need to select the Back button until you get back to the Shopping Cart Data Quality Summary page and then select the "Accept" button to continue the ordering process. Note that this quality information is also available directly from the TES Data Set page and can be viewed at any time.
A second e-mail message, with the subject "ECS Notification", will contain the details of how the order will be delivered. Each data file will be delivered with a metadata file that will be identified by the data file name with a .met appended.
NOTE: Your EDG order is available for 72 hours. If you have not received a notification message within 24 hours, contact Langley Data Center User Services.
A complete User's Manual is available through the EDG.
