A variety of summer internship positions are available within the Mathematical and Computational Sciences Division (MCSD) of the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD and Boulder, CO. The number of positions varies each year based on programmatic and budget constraints.

This program provides an opportunity for a limited number of high school junior and senior students with a serious interest in the mathematical and computational sciences to work with staff members in areas of mathematical modeling, visualization, algorithms, and high performance computing that are applied to NIST problems. All positions are unpaid volunteer in nature.

Requirements:

	Interns must be U. S. citizens and have a grade point average of at least 3.5/4.0.
	Participation in this must be approved by the high school internship coordinator and must satisfy a high school requirement.
	Applicants must prepare the following documents: A resume that includes name, address, phone number, e-mail, current grade level, principal courses in mathematics and the sciences taken, computer languages and applications in which the applicant is competent, and a statement of future plans and interests of no longer than one page. An official transcript with a list of current courses and cumulative grade- point-average.

Important Dates:

These documents must be submitted no later than March 15 of the year of the summer internship. They will be evaluated by a committee of MCSD members and the successful candidates will be notified no later than April 15. Successful candidates will be sent a package of required forms and instructions. These must be completed and returned to the summer intern coordinator above no later than June 1. The dates of March 15 and June 1 for submission of documents are critical. Any applications or documents received after those dates will not be considered. The Mathematical and Computational Sciences Division (MCSD) in the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) at NIST selects students for the SURF program in cooperation with the National Science Foundation. This program allows students to spend 10 to 12 weeks at NIST, working directly with MCSD staff members, to participate in research related to mathematical modeling, visualization, algorithms, and high performance computing. This program is open to U. S. citizens and permanent residents. It also provides a stipend. The application consists of two parts. The student's university must submit a grant proposal that provides details about its academic program and nominating one (or more) students. The students themselves must provide a copy of their transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent or personal statement. NIST employs students in a variety of temporary positions in the excepted service. This program is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. The students in this program typically work full-time scheduled during the summer and other school vacation periods. In some cases, students attending local colleges and universities may have the opportunity to work part-time while attending school. The duties of the position are related to the student's academic or career goals. There are no conversion privileges under this program.
