The Central Operation of Resources for Educators, or CORE, is offering educational materials to support the STS-118 space shuttle mission, which will carry the first Educator Astronaut, mission specialist Barbara Morgan, into space. STS-118 is currently targeted for launch on August 8, 2007.

STS-118 educational materials available include the STS-118 bulletin board set, a collection of related NASA DVDs, a family-oriented microgravity kit, a Space Garden kit and the STS-118 mission patch.
Educators and families may use the materials in the STS-118 bulletin board set to inform students about the STS-118 space shuttle mission. The bulletin board layout is designed for a 4-foot by 5-foot space and includes these items: the To Inspire the Next Generation Poster, the Barbara Morgan Lithograph, the Space Shuttle Endeavour Lithograph and the STS-118 Web Site Information Page.
The subject-area classroom module Igniting Knowledge is a collection of subject-specific DVD titles. This module includes materials that will assist in teaching a unit on human spaceflight. Included are the following NASA DVDs:
-- "Exploring Science...As Only NASA Can," a collection of CORE's most popular videos and appropriate for several grade levels.
-- "Liftoff to Learning: Plants in Space," where viewers are invited to participate in an experiment by growing seeds on Earth as control experiments for an experiment on plant growth with space shuttle astronauts.
-- "Space Shuttle Return to Flight," a seven-segment video program describing NASA's Return to Flight preparation for the STS-121 launch.
-- The module also comes with an International Space Station lithograph with information on the back of the picture describing why there is an International Space Station and with key Web sites to obtain more information about the ISS.
Learn about microgravity with the Microgravity and Me Family Activity Kit. The kit includes the microgravity educator guide with activities, a set of stickers featuring the International Space Station, a microgravity poster with educational activities on the back, and a Barbara Morgan bookmark.

Students can follow along with an education-related plant growing experiment that is flying on the STS-118 mission, using the Space Garden kit. Space Garden's unique growth chamber is a ground-based version of an actual vegetable growth system designed for the International Space Station.
Space Garden comes with all the materials needed to conduct biological, agricultural and life science investigations. Each kit includes an expandable growth chamber, seeds, watering syringe, growth medium and educational activities to introduce the science of plants in a fun way.
The STS-118 mission patch represents Space Shuttle Endeavour on its mission to continue assembly of the International Space Station. The patch symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge through space exploration. The flight will accomplish its ISS assembly tasks through a series of spacewalks, robotic operations and logistics transfers.

On the patch, the star at the top of the gold astronaut symbol overlays the starboard S-5 truss segment, highlighting its installation during the mission. The flame of knowledge represents the importance of education, and honors teachers and students everywhere. The seven white stars and the red maple leaf signify the American and Canadian crewmembers flying aboard Endeavour.
The Central Operation of Resources for Educators serves as the worldwide distribution center for NASA-produced multimedia materials. For a minimal charge, CORE provides educational materials through its mail order service to educators unable to visit one of the NASA Educator Resource Centers.
By providing educators with mission-specific educational materials, NASA continues its tradition of investing in the nation's education programs. It is directly tied to the agency's major education goal of attracting and retaining students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. To compete effectively for the minds, imaginations and career ambitions of America's young people, NASA is focused on engaging and retaining students in education efforts that encourage their pursuit of disciplines critical to NASA's future engineering, scientific and technical missions.
