DUI Fatalities Down Nationwide and in 32 States
Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters announced an estimated 12,998 died in crashes where a vehicle operator had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, a 3.7 percent decline from the 13,491 killed in 2006. However, 25 states had an increase in the number of drunk motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes.

Sec. Peters Announces Historic Drop in Highway Fatalities and Rate
Sec. PetersThe 2007 overall traffic fatalities fell to 41,059, the lowest number since 1994, while the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was 1.37, lowest on record. Motorcycle fatalities continue to be a concern, accounting for 13 percent of all fatalities.
