Frequently Asked Questions

1) How can I confirm that Berkeley Lab received my resume?

Once you submit your resume through the online application process, an acknowledgement page will appear. This indicates your resume was received. Additionally, you will receive an email confirmation that your resume has been entered into our database. It will be active in our resume database for a period of six months. During this time, it will be reviewed and considered for current job openings.

2) Should I submit my resume for every job I want to apply for?

No, that's not necessary, unless you want to submit different resumes for different openings. Your resume will be linked to each job you apply for, but even if you apply for only one job, the resume goes into a general database that our recruiters search regularly to find qualified candidates for all openings.

3) Will my resume be considered for positions other than those for which I applied?

Our recruiters will consider your qualifications for all of our current job opportunities. You may be contacted regarding a position other than the one for which you applied

4) Can I get information on the status of my resume application?

Due to the high volume of resumes we receive, we are unable to provide reports on the status of your resume in the screening process. A recruiter will contact you within two to three weeks after receipt of your resume, if there is an appropriate match between your resume and one of our openings.

5) How do I know if a job is still open?

Visit our job posting web site at http://jobs.lbl.gov/ for a complete listing of our job openings. All positions listed on the web are currently open. Once a position is closed, it is removed from the site.

6) Keyword Searches

Keyword searches require that you enter complete words (no wildcards or partial words) separated by spaces. You can also search for a position by requisition number if you know the number, by inserting it as a keyword.

7) Do I have to be a US Citizen to work at LBNL?

We'll consider all qualified applicants who are legally eligible to work in the United States, regardless of citizenship.

8) Is submitting a resume the same as submitting an Employment Application?

No. To be considered for a position, you can simply apply with a resume (and cover letter). You will be contacted if there is interest in your resume/CV. If you are invited for an interview, you will complete the official LBNL employment application at that time.

9) Do I really need to fill out the AA/EEO form?

Yes. This is the final step in the online application process. This information is voluntary, yet essential for our diversity efforts. It will be used to help us measure progress toward achieving a diverse workforce that reflects the richness of our community. This voluntary information will not affect the consideration of your application.

However, if you choose not to indicate your gender or ethnicity, you can respond by selecting the ‘I choose not to self identify’ options.

10) Some of the functions on the LBNL employment site are not working.

Our employment site works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or higher) or Netscape Communicator (version 6.0 or higher). Using other web browsers may cause some of the functions of the site to not work properly.

11) Whom can I contact if I have a question about a job posting?

You can email contact-lbnl-recruitment@lbl.gov with your inquiry. The appropriate recruiter will respond to you as soon as possible.

12) I'd like to talk to someone about working at the Berkeley Lab. Is there a way for me to request an informational interview?

Unfortunately, we are unable to respond to individual employment phone calls or offer informational interviews due to the high volume of requests we receive. For the same reason, we cannot respond to requests for individual feedback on resumes. The best way to stay informed about jobs at the Berkeley Lab is to check our web site periodically and read the job postings carefully. Over time you will get a good sense of the kinds of positions we post and the qualifications we seek.

Again, thank you for considering Berkeley Lab as your employer of choice.
