AmeriCorps is a great opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. You have the power to effect change at a local level.
The YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is located in an economically and socially distressed neighborhood. The AmeriCorps*VISTA positions at the YWCA were designed to develop and increase the capacity of the neighborhood to address its own self-identified needs. As an AmeriCorps*VISTA member, I helped resolve housing issues through collaboration with other agencies. I also improved the appearance of the neighborhood working alongside residents in this endeavor.
I joined AmeriCorps*VISTA because it gave me the opportunity to put my ideas into action. Through AmeriCorps, I gained practical experience in community development, which I plan to use for the rest of my life. This is a unique and valuable opportunity, and it was well worth the challenges it presented.
After my term is over, I plan to remain at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg as a post-transitional case counselor. I will be serving women who are leaving the YWCA's transitional housing programs. Thanks to AmeriCorps, I have gained the skills I need to move on and succeed. |
