Justice Cunningham receives top award from Department of Corrections
The Kentucky Department of Corrections recently honored Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham with the agency’s top award, the 2008 Lucille Hurt Robuck “Commitment to Corrections” Award. Justice Cunningham has devoted his career to the field of criminal justice. He is also a noted Kentucky historian and an accomplished author. Prior to becoming a member of the state’s highest court, he spent 35 years serving as a circuit judge for Lyon, Trigg and Caldwell counties, a commonwealth’s attorney, city attorney and public defender. He also served as a hearing officer for the Kentucky Board of Claims and as a trial commissioner. Full news release.
Court of Appeals Judge Clayton to give racial fairness talk at UK
Court of Appeals Judge Denise G. Clayton will present a talk titled “Racial Fairness Commission – What is Fair, What is Just?” at noon Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the University of Kentucky College of Law Courtroom. The event is free and open to the public. Judge Clayton is the chairwoman for the Jefferson County Commission on Racial Fairness. In October 2007, she became the first black woman appointed to the Court of Appeals.
Registration open for mediation workshop
Registration is open for the 3rd annual mediation colloquium that will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Lexington. Bill Eddy, who is an attorney, mediator, therapist and author, will be the presenter for the workshop, which is titled “Managing High-Conflict Personalities.” Registration is $275, with a $50 discount for members of the Administrative Office of the Courts Mediation Roster. Henry County Middle School earns top rating in national We the People: Project Citizen showcase
Henry County Middle School’s We the People: Project Citizen entry on recycling plastic water bottles recently earned the top rating of Superior at the national Project Citizen showcase in New Orleans. Teams from 50 U.S. schools participated in the showcase. Henry County team members were Shelby Abrams, Sydney Abrams, Savannah Allgeier, Amber Aneszko, Garrett Black, Rebekah Dale, Cassey Fischer, Cathryn Fischer, Cassie Grammer, Shelby Grigsby, Ashley Jeffrey, Crystal Matthews, Victoria Paynter, Carlie Seligman, Devon Shields and Emily Vegh.
