The Sant Ocean Hall is one part of a broader Ocean Initiative at the Smithsonian to increase ocean awareness and usher in a new wave of public ocean literacy and ocean-friendly behavior.

The Initiative includes the breathtaking new ocean hall, a comprehensive onsite and online Ocean Education Program, an enhanced Marine Science Program, and an Ocean Endowment to ensure that the Hall and Education Program reflect the latest and best ocean science.  Through these components, the Initiative integrates the science, education, and conservation needed to improve ocean health.

The initiative extends well beyond the Smithsonian and includes support from many leading marine science organizations and institutions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been a partner on the Initiative from the very beginning. Other significant collaborators include the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the New England Aquarium, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and many others.
