The Board of Visitors of the United States Air Force Academy is established under Title 10, United States Code, Section 9355.
MISSION
The Board inquires into the morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods and other matters relating to the Academy which the Board decides to consider.
The Board meets at least four times per year, with at least two of those meetings at the Academy. The Board prepares semi-annual reports containing its views and recommendations pertaining to the Academy. Each written report is submitted concurrently to the Secretary of Defense, through the Secretary of the Air Force, and to the Committee on Armed Services of the Senate and the Committee on Armed Services of the House of Representatives. STRUCTURE
The Board is constituted annually and is comprised of 15 members. The President of the United States appoints six members, at least two of whom shall be graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy. The Vice President of the United States or the President pro tempore of the Senate designates three members (with two being members of the Senate Appropriations Committee).
The Speaker of the House of Representatives designates four members. Three shall be members of the House of Representatives and the fourth may not be a member of the House. The Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Chairman of the House Arms Services Committee, or their designees, fill the last two positions.
The six presidential appointees are designated for a period of 3 years. Each of the additional nine board members serves a minimum term of 1 year. Any member whose term of office has expired shall continue to serve until a successor is appointed. The President shall designate persons each year to succeed members whose terms expire that year.
