THOMPSON SCHEDULES NOMINATION HEARING ON PREWITT, WALKER

Washington, DC -- Senate Governmental Affairs Chairman Fred Thompson (R-TN) has announced a hearing on the nominations of Kenneth Prewitt to be Director of the Census Bureau and Mike Walker to be Deputy Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The hearing will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 10:30 in Room 342, Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Kenneth Prewitt was President of the Social Science Research Council in New York from 1979 to 1985 and again from 1995 to the present. Previously he was Senior Vice President of the Rockefeller Foundation (1985-95), Director of the National Opinion Research Center (1976-79), and Chairman of the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago (1975-76). He holds a B.A. degree from Southern Methodist University, a M.A. from Washington University, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Robert "Mike" Walker has been Under Secretary of the Army since 1997. Previously, he was Assistant Secretary of the Army (1994-97), Majority Clerk and Staff Director for the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction (1987-93), and Minority Clerk for the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction (1981-86). He attended the University of Tennessee.
