Water and Power Subcommittee Authorizes Federal Assistance for Water Projects
The House Water and Power Subcommittee, led by Ranking Member Grace Napolitano (D-CA38) and Chairman Ken Calvert (D-CA44), today unanimously approved H.R. 1598 and H.R. 1732. These bills authorize federal assistance for water projects in San Diego, California and Williamson County, Texas. “I fully support these efforts to enhance all western states’ opportunities to apply innovative technologies to help address their water supply needs,” Napolitano stated.
H.R. 1598 authorizes federal funding for the design and construction of a desalter and a regional brine line to treat brackish groundwater. It would also provide for the strategic placement of wetlands to naturally clean surface water in the San Diego Creek Watershed. All federal assistance would be limited to 25% of the overall project’s cost. “This bill is yet another step towards “drought proofing” southern California and decreasing our dependence on imported Colorado River water,” noted the Congresswoman.
H.R. 1732 authorizes federal assistance for projects designed to recycle and deliver effluent to parks and other facilities in Williamson County, Texas that currently use drinking water for irrigation purposes. Federal funding would be limited to 25% of the overall project’s costs. “I am well aware of the challenges associated with rapid population growth to a metropolitan area. Water recycling is a proven tool to help local communities manage such growth, and I will continue to work with our Chairman to make sure that more Western States receive the benefits from water recycling projects,” Napolitano commented.
The Congresswoman looks forward to the passage of both bills by the full Resources Committee and the House of Representatives.
