Statement of Congressman John D. Dingell
on NHTSA’s Final Rule on CAFE Standards
for Light Trucks
Washington, D.C. – Congressman John D. Dingell, Ranking Member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, today released the following statement concerning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) final rule increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for light trucks:
"NHTSA’s final rule on CAFE standards for light trucks during model years 2005 through 2007 appears to be consistent with the fuel savings goal of 5 billion gallons over model years 2006 through 2012 set out in H.R. 4, the "SAFE Act of 2001," which was adopted by the House as well as the House-Senate conference committee during the 107th Congress. While these new standards present auto manufacturers with a challenge, it is one we hope and expect they can achieve. As NHTSA implements this multi-year regulation, I will continue to be vigilant in ensuring the implementation of the regulation does not jeopardize American jobs or passenger safety."
