CHAIRMAN COLLINS' STATEMENT ON POSTAL RATE INCREASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Collins released the following statement on the postal rate increase announced today:

"This rate increase highlights why postal reform legislation is necessary. The U.S. Postal Service is the lynchpin of a $900 billion dollar industry, providing 9 million jobs nationwide and playing a critical role in our economy. Yet under its current business model, its financial future simply is not viable," said Senator Collins. "The Collins-Carper postal reform bill would modernize the rate-setting process to provide more predictability for its users and help ensure a stronger financial future for the organization. Absent this reform, the Postal Service will now face ten months of expensive and cumbersome litigation, and more importantly, postal ratepayers will face billions of dollars in costs over the next several years. I am hopeful that the House will name conferees soon to ensure that this legislation moves forward.”
