Sen. Cornyn Visits Odessa Fuel Station; Calls on Congressional Leaders to Address Gas Prices as Soon as Congress Reconvenes

ODESSA—As Congress reconvenes next week after a month-long state and district work period, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, made a last stop in Odessa today to again call on Democrat Leadership to finally address high gas prices.
“Over the past five weeks, I have met with families, small business owners, non-profits and other Texans across the state. From El Paso to Texarkana, Texans have told me their number one concern is burdensome gas prices.
“I share their frustration and for months I’ve been pushing for Congressional leaders to take tangible steps to bring down these high prices at the pump. Unfortunately, Democrat leaders in Congress have engaged in political charades rather than the hard work of addressing the nation’s energy crisis.
“Today I’m in Odessa to make yet another call on Congressional leaders to tackle gas prices as soon as Congress reconvenes this week. There are several proposals that my Republican colleagues and I have presented that would lower gas prices and just as important, reduce our country’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Texans in Odessa and across the state will be watching as Congress reconvenes. They’ve made their concerns clear, and now it’s time for Congressional leaders to finally listen and take action to reduce gas prices for all Americans.”
Sen. Cornyn has supported several proposals that would open up oil-rich regions of the U.S. to oil and gas exploration and production, encourage the research and development of plug-in electric cars, and strengthen the U.S. Futures Market by putting more cops on the beat to investigate price manipulation. Unfortunately, Senate and House leaders have refused to hold a single vote on any proposals to boost domestic energy production. Instead, they adjourned for the month of August, leaving the nation’s energy crisis unaddressed.
While gas prices have decreased slightly in recent weeks, the market remains volatile due to international conflicts and brewing hurricanes in the Atlantic. At the same time, prices are still $1 more per gallon than they were last year and are too high for Texas families on a budget.
Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
