Deadlines for filing claims with crop insurance agents are:

June 1st: corn

June 14th: soy

Late planting deadlines:

June 25th: corn

July 10th: soy

June 10-15 is a pivotal time for decision making:

  1. If covered by federal crop insurance, farmers may not plant at all and get prevented planting payment, or they may
  2. Replant original crop, but expect a 30% reduction in yields from shorter growing season, finally they can
  3. Replant substitute crop like soy, sorghum, millet which may not have as high per bushel return on investment

As soon as a farmer realizes the need to replant damaged/destroyed crops, they need to contact their insurer to assess damage prior to replanting. Insurance generally cover 60% of projected yields if there is no replanting to mitigate loss.

Farmers need to be in close contact with their insurer through this month. ISU has a website explaining Delayed and Prevented Planting Provisions:
