Senator Mikulski is proud to announce that if you’re a Maryland homeowner struggling to keep your home, relief is on the way! Congress worked around the clock on legislation to provide relief to communities and homeowners struggling with the subprime mortgage crisis. The Housing and Economic Recovery Act – the most significant housing legislation in decades – was signed into law on July 30. Among the industry reform in the legislation, the bill:

Will allow at least 400,000 homeowners to trade their subprime loans for safe and affordable FHA backed mortgages.

Provides $180 million for the counselors who are on the front lines of the crisis, including Senator Mikulski's amendment to provide $30 million for increased legal counseling services through NeighborWorks.

Prevents future foreclosures by requiring lenders to provide a one-page, easy-to-understand summary to homebuyers with the maximum possible costs per month clearly identified.
