Gordon: Bold Efforts on Energy Contained in House Package Will Put U.S. on Path to a More Sustainable Future

(Washington, DC) House Committee on Science and Technology Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) issued the following statement after joining the House Democratic Leadership and his fellow Committee Chairmen at a press conference this morning to unveil House Democrats' comprehensive energy package aimed at increasing U.S. energy independence:

“With concerns about global climate change, high gas and electricity prices, and our growing reliance on unstable energy-supplying nations, energy has been placed at the top of the Congressional ‘to-do’ list, and the Speaker asked Committees of jurisdiction to contribute energy bills that make bold changes to benefit the country and consumers.”

“I’m proud of the Science and Technology Committee’s contribution to the House energy package. We’ve worked hard to clear twelve bipartisan, consensus-driven energy and environment research bills through Committee this year, seven of which are included in the House package announced today.”

“For too long we have depended on a handful of finite resources to power our economy. Our future lies in our ability to develop a wide range of energy technologies using the cleanest natural resources from the sun, the oceans, and the earth. To do this we have to tap America’s most abundant and renewable resource – the human spirit of innovation that has given us the quality of life we enjoy today.”

“Today’s energy package is an aggressive first step. A challenge this complex requires generations of effort and dedication, and Democrats are committed to laying the groundwork now. This Congress will continue to pursue solutions to the nation’s energy challenges, and the package put forth today will certainly make a vital contribution to the national strategy to put the U.S., and the world, on track to a more sustainable future.”

The Committee legislation included in the House package is listed below:

  • HR 364 – Establishing the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E)
  • HR 906 – The Global Change Research and Data Management Act of 2007
  • HR 1933 – The Carbon Capture and Storage Research, Development and Demonstration Act of 2007
  • HR 2304 – The Advanced Geothermal Energy Research and Development Act of 2007
  • HR 2313 – The Marine Renewable Energy Research and Development Act of 2007
  • HR 2773 – The Biofuels Research and Development Enhancement Act
  • HR 2774 – The Solar Energy Research and Advancement Act of 2007
