Dingell Blasts President’s CHIP Veto

Washington, DC - Rep. John D. Dingell (D-MI), Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement in response to President Bush’s veto of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2007:

"The President’s veto of a bipartisan plan to help 10 million children is incomprehensible. It willfully ignores the needs of low-income children and the recommendations of Congress, 43 State Governors, more than 300 coalition groups and the vast majority of the American people.

"Unlike America’s children, the President has nothing to lose by vetoing this legislation. President Bush has government-run health insurance. But millions of American children do not have any coverage at all.

"It saddens and baffles me to think that the President would not want to make health insurance for ten million children a positive part of his legacy. I pledge to keep fighting for this bill and to protect America’s most vulnerable children."
