SCHUMER: ALMOST $150,000 COMING TO STATEN ISLAND UNIVERSITY
HOSPITAL
Federal Funds will be used for the construction of the Regina
McGinn Education Center in New York
US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the US Department
of Housing and Development has awarded $149,115 to Staten Island
University Hospital for the construction of the Regina McGinn Education
Center.
The new Education Center will meet the needs of the hospital to
advance the education of its 400 medical students, 200 residents,
and 1,000 staff and doctors. The new center will include additional
teaching space, a 3oo person auditorium, and facilities which provide
the latest audio-visual technology. This is helpful in allowing
students, teachers and doctors to transmit radiology images. The
second floor of the new building will be home to the University's
growing medical library. The new center will benefit not only the
hospital's medical staff and students, but also neighborhood organizations
and support groups that need space to meet and serve their constituencies.
"This state-of-the-art education center will provide much needed
facilities to make sure our medical professionals are getting the
best training with the most advanced technology possible,"
Schumer said. "It is critical we continue to invest in healthcare
on every level."
Regina Marie McGinn had been a doctor at Staten Island University
Hospital for almost fifteen years before she succumbed to cancer
in August of 2001. Her academic success, professional accomplishments
and u commitment to quality patient care had long established McGinn

a devoted physician and educator and as Associate Director of Medicine,
she became one of the faculty's spokespersons for medical education
. For years Mcginn stated that as a teaching hospital, Staten Island
University Hospital had the obligation to provide the resources
necessary to educate future generations of physicians.
Staten Island University Hospital is a not-for-profit 785-bed,
tertiary care teaching hospital and located in Staten Island. Founded
in 1861, the Hospital today is a member of the North Shore - Long
