Senator Stevens Introduces Resolution to Protect Arctic Fisheries

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Vice Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) today introduced a resolution directing the United States to initiate efforts with other nations to negotiate international agreements to better manage migratory and transboundary fish stocks in the Arctic Ocean. Cosponsors of the resolution include Senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), John Sununu (R-N.H.), Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.).

“The Arctic Ocean is the final frontier for the world’s commercial fisheries,” said Senator Stevens.  “Scientific evidence suggests that as the world’s climate changes, ocean temperature regimes may shift and cause many fish stocks to colonize new habitats in the Arctic Ocean.  As we have seen in far too many cases around the world, fish stocks can easily become depleted when the international community fails to develop effective, science-based agreements for conserving and managing shared fish stocks.  The goal of this resolution is to ensure that we do not repeat that same mistake with any commercial fisheries that develop in the Arctic Ocean.”

“The effects of climate change on Arctic marine ecosystems are a concern to everyone who lives and works in the North Country,” said Dave Benton, Executive Director of the Marine Conservation Alliance.  “Senator Stevens has once again stepped up to the plate for conservation, and for the people who depend on the resources of the Arctic for their way of life. The United States needs to be a leader to the rest of the world, and Stevens’ resolution lays out a plan for that leadership. MCA supports this conservation oriented, precautionary approach to resource management in the face of an uncertain future for the Arctic.”
