Sen. Hutchison Announces Over $1.5 Million in Research Grants for UT-Austin


WASHINGTON -- Texas’ senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) today announced that the University of Texas at Austin will receive $1,546,449 in research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

“The University of Texas at Austin is a world leader in research and education,” Sen. Hutchison said. “These funds will help the University of Texas develop new initiatives to expand our understanding of science and technology.”

A $765,510 grant will support a project entitled “Collaborative Research- NSF PetaApps: Storm Surge Modeling on Petascale Computers” under the direction of Clinton Dawson.

A project entitled “Collaborative Research: Understanding the Dynamics of the Earth: High-Resolution Mantle Convection Simulation on Petascale Computers,” under the direction of Omar Ghattas, received a $510,939 grant.

A $270,000 grant will support a project entitled “Modeling and Understanding of Radiowave Propagation in Forested Environments” which is under the direction of Ali Yilmaz.

Sen. Hutchison is a senior member of the Commerce Science, and Transportation Committee, which authorizes the NSF, and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, which funds the NSF budget.
