Sen. Hutchison Announces $3.1 Million in Research Grants for Texas Universities

WASHINGTON -- Texas’ senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) today announced that Texas universities received $3.1 million in research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

“These grants will support the efforts of Texas’ universities to be national leaders in scientific research and education,” Sen. Hutchison said.

Texas Tech University received a $2.5 million grant to support a project entitled “PIRE: Simulation of Electronic Non-Adiabatic Dynamics for Reactions with Organic Macromolecules, Liquids, and Surfaces” which is under the direction of William Hase. According to NSF, the project will develop new, cutting edge software, and develop a model for scientific computing involving international collaboration.

Texas A&M received a $600,000 grant to support a project entitled “Geoscience Scholars” under the direction of Mary Richardson. According to NSF, this project will provide scholarships for a minimum of 26 students majoring in one of the geosciences. These will be two-year scholarships of up to $10,000 annually.

Sen. Hutchison is a senior member of the Commerce Science, and Transportation Committee, which authorizes the NSF, and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, which funds the NSF budget.
