Sen. Hutchison Announces $2.45 Million to Aid Workers Dislocated by Hurricane Dolly
Labor Dept. Grants Will Help Fund Recovery Efforts in Texas Counties
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior Senator, today announced $2.45 million in U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Investment Act National Emergency Grant funding to create temporary employment for workers dislocated by Hurricane Dolly and to aid in recovery efforts.
“Hurricane Dolly battered South Texas in a matter of hours, but the impact of the storm will continue to be felt by Texans as they work to put their lives and communities back together,” Sen. Hutchison said. “This funding will help in the recovery process by assisting workers who were displaced by the storm.”
The Department of Labor awarded the grant to the Texas Workforce Commission, which will administer funds in the counties of Aransas, Bexar, Brooks, Calhoun, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Victoria, and Willacy.
According to the Labor Department, the project will create temporary employment to assist in clean-up and recovery efforts resulting from Hurricane Dolly, as well as provide food, clothing, shelter, and other humanitarian assistance for disaster victims.
Hurricane Dolly, the first hurricane to hit the U.S. since September 2007, made landfall as a category 2 storm on South Padre Island on July 23 and caused flooding and storm damage along the southwest coast region of Texas.
