Sen. Hutchison Helps Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Mainland Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary
Continues Three Day, 600 Mile Bus Tour to Meet with Gulf Coast Texans

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior senator, today helped the Mainland Medical Center celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Hospital Auxiliary. At the ceremony and reception, the first Kathryn Bailey Nursing Scholarship was presented in honor of her mother, one of the charter members and first Corresponding Secretary.

“The Mainland Medical Center Auxiliary has long been dear to my heart. My mother was a charter member and I am honored that the nursing scholarship named in her honor will support education and contribute to another 50 years of good work,” said Sen. Hutchison. “Individually and collectively, the Auxiliary members have been the driving force behind community initiatives that have enhanced our lives for over half a century.”

Approximately 100 people, including Auxiliary members, attended the ceremony and reception. Also in attendance were Texas City Mayor Matthew T. Doyle, City Commissioners Tommy Clark and Dedrick Johnson, State Senator Mike Jackson, La Marque Mayor Larry Crow, Santa Fe Mayor Ralph Stenzel, Hitchcock Mayor Lee Sander, Dickinson Mayor Julie Masters, and former La Marque Mayor Pete Rygaard.

The Auxiliary is a non-profit association serving others in a hospital setting. Since its founding on December 3, 1957, more than 1,400 members have contributed over 686,000 hours assisting patients, families and hospital staff. The organization has raised more than $1 million for nursing scholarships, medical equipment, hospital renovations and charities.

Today is the final day of Sen. Hutchison’s three day, 600 mile bus tour with 16 stops throughout South Texas and the Gulf Coast. Sen. Hutchison launched the tour on Monday in Harlingen and will bring the trip to a close with an event at the San Jacinto Memorial in La Porte this evening.

Sen. Hutchison is a member of the Senate Republican Leadership as Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
