Sen. Hutchison Secures $10 Million for San Antonio River Project
Bill Also Includes Sen. Hutchison’s Reimbursement Language for City’s Upfront Costs

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the committee has approved the Fiscal Year 2009 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill, which includes $10 million that Sen. Hutchison secured for the San Antonio River Improvement Project. The bill is now ready to be considered by the full Senate.

Sen. Hutchison was also able to include legislative language, subject to appropriations, that will allow the city of San Antonio to be reimbursed for upfront costs associated with the project that are in excess of the non-Federal share.

“I am a strong supporter of the San Antonio River Improvement Project,” said Sen. Hutchison. “This funding will be used to beautify our already scenic river and open it to more recreational uses while protecting and restoring key portions of this precious resource. It is also critical that San Antonio will now be allowed to be reimbursed for the upfront costs associated to the project.”

"Senator Hutchison's perseverance in getting funding and assistance for this project has been absolutely indispensable," said San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger. "She knows how to get things accomplished quickly and has been a tireless advocate of this and many other projects. As a community and statewide, we are fortunate to have her in our corner."

“Once again, Senator Hutchison has shown her leadership in helping us improve the San Antonio River through the efficient investment of federal resources,” said Bexar County Nelson Wolff. “Combined with $125 million in local funding approved by Bexar County voters in May, the required reimbursement language and the $10 million appropriation ensure the continued success of this project.”

The $10 million in funding for the San Antonio River Improvement Project will be used to beautify and create recreational facilities along nine miles of the San Antonio River south of the downtown area while maintaining existing flood controls. The project also seeks to restore the valuable ecosystem that was stripped by the creation of the current San Antonio Channel.

Sen. Hutchison gave remarks at the unveiling of an architectural rendering of the final stage of the “mission reach” project in March 2008. Since FY07, Sen. Hutchison has previously helped to secure nearly $14 million in construction funding for this project.
