Sen. Hutchison Announces Five New Veteran Outpatient Clinics Across Texas
Clinics to Open in Lake Jackson, Katy, Tomball, Richmond and El Paso

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior senator, today announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will utilize funding that she secured to open Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Lake Jackson, Katy, Tomball, Richmond and El Paso. The start-up funding, combined with the projected annual operating budgets and full-time employees at each clinic, will significantly expand the veteran medical care network in Texas.

“Community-based outpatient clinics not only provide vital medical services to our veterans, but they make important contributions to the local economy,” said Sen. Hutchison. “The new clinics will be an asset to veterans and the towns in which they will be opened.”

According to the VA, CBOCs are established to improve access for veterans to primary care and mental health services. Primary care will consist of health promotion, maintenance, routine and urgent care procedures, and education. Mental health services will provide medication management, screening and prevention for mental health disorders including evaluation for mental illness, substance abuse, and post traumatic stress disorder.

To reduce transportation time for veterans, CBOCs are generally located in central locations. The CBOCs in Lake Jackson, Katy, Tomball, Richmond and El Paso will be serving patients in a medically underserved manpower and a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage area.

Sen. Hutchison is the Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.
