Sen. Hutchison Announces $26 Million in Funding for UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior senator, today announced that the National Center for Research Resources, a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio a $26 million “Clinical and Translational Science Award” (CTSA).

“The UT Health Science Center in San Antonio is one of the leading medical research institutes in America,” said Sen. Hutchison. “This grant will help translate the critical research discoveries made at the Health Center into treatments even more quickly.”

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is one of 14 institutions receiving a new CTSA grant this year. Creating a unique network of medical research institutions across the nation, the CTSA consortium is working to reduce the time it takes for laboratory discoveries to become treatments for patients and to engage communities in clinical research efforts.

These 14 academic health centers join 24 others announced in 2006 and 2007. Total funding for these new awards is $533 million over five years. When fully implemented in 2012, about 60 institutions will be linked together to energize the discipline of clinical and translational science.

The NIH — The Nation's Medical Research Agency — includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research, and it investigates the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.

TEXT OF THE LETTER

The Honorable Pete Geren
Secretary, United States Army
101 Army Pentagon
Washington D.C. 20310

Dear Secretary Geren,

During the week of 19 May, 2008, the Red River Redevelopment Authority and Day & Zimmermann Group sent your Installations and Environment office a resolution that detailed an agreement in principle on the footprint of the BRAC property to be transferred at the Lone Star Ammunition Depot. The resolution contained documents and maps that were prepared jointly by the Red River Redevelopment Authority and Day & Zimmermann.

We are aware that both parties involved have reached a mutual agreement on the land and property transfer, which will soon allow your department to initiate the real and personal property disposal planning process in accordance with BRAC law.

The successful and fair redevelopment of the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant has been of great importance to our delegation, and we support the agreement your office has received. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison
