Stevens Pleased to See FCC Transform “Do-Not-Call” List to “Never Call” List
Vice Chairman Pushed Legislation Earlier this Year to Protect Consumers on “Do-Not-Call” List

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Vice Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) today said he was pleased to see the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) amend its rules to require telemarketers to make registrations with the nation’s Do-Not-Call list permanent.  The change was required by legislation sponsored by Vice Chairman Stevens and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.).  The legislation, which was approved by Congress earlier this year, allows the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to collect fees to maintain the registry and removes the need for consumers to re-register their names on the Do-Not-Call list.  President George W. Bush signed the legislation into law on February 15, 2008.

“The Do-Not-Call list is now officially the Never Call list,” said Senator Stevens.  “This registry has dramatically limited the number of unwanted calls to millions of Americans, including thousands of Alaskans.  The Do-Not-Call Registry has also helped prevent telemarketing fraud and abuse, and improved the quality of life during dinner time.”

Before this new law, consumers who registered their phone numbers with the Do-Not-Call Registry would be removed every five years and forced to re-register. Currently, more than 200,000 Alaskan numbers have been listed in the registry, and nearly 52 million numbers nationwide would have expired before September 30, 2008.
