SCHUMER ANNOUNCES TRIP TO
ISRAEL
Schumer, Jewish Leaders Expected to Meet with Sharon,
Families of Victims of Terrorism
Senator Describes Trip as "A Mission Of Solidarity
with the Israeli People"
US Senator Charles E. Schumer and several leaders of major Jewish
groups - including Malcolm Honlein, Chairman of the Conference of
Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, Jim Tisch, President of
the United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater New York (UJA) and
Michael Miller, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations
Council of New York (JCRC) - will travel to Israel next week in a
demonstration of solidarity with the Israeli people. During their
two-day visit, Schumer and the group will visit Tel Aviv and Jerusalem
for a series of tours and meetings with Israeli leaders. Schumer leaves
for Israel on the evening of Saturday, July 7.
On Sunday, July 8, their schedule in Tel Aviv will
include a wreath laying ceremony at the Rabin Memorial as well as
a visit to Pacha Nightclub, the site of the
recent disco terrorist attack. Schumer will visit hospitalized victims
of the Tel Aviv disco bombing, followed by a meeting with United
States Ambassador Martin S. Indyk.
The group will then travel to Jerusalem, where he
will join Mayor Ehud Olmert for dinner and
a tour of the Old City. He will remain overnight in Jerusalem.
On Monday, July 9, the group's schedule in Jerusalem is expected
to include meetings with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres. The group will take a helicopter tour of
the northern border with Lebanon and Syria, and visit the potential
site of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. The group will also meet with
the families of victims of recent violence against Israel, and return
to New York on the morning of Tuesday, July 10.
