Ackerman Announces Money for Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center

(Washington, DC) - U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today announced that the House Appropriations Committee has approved $200,000 for the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center (JCC) in East Hills, Long Island. The funds, which Ackerman requested, were approved as part of the 2009 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill.

The money would be used to maintain and expand the Youth Action After School program for at- risk minority youth who are students in the Roslyn School District. The program, directed by the Sid Jacobson JCC, is run in conjunction with the Concerned Citizens for Roslyn Youth.

The program is designed to help elementary school age children academically, behaviorally and socially. These components include homework assistance and academic support from licensed teachers, the building of social skills led by social work interns and enrichment activities such as science, art and computer education.

The program operates five days per week from 2:40 p.m. to 6 p.m. and presently includes 50 at-risk students.

“This worthy program provides at-risk youth with an outstanding foundation for success” said Ackerman. “These important funds would go a long way in providing the support these students need in order to keep them off the streets, excel in school and succeed in life.”

"We are very grateful to Representative Ackerman for his leadership with these funds for the Youth Action After School program” said Susan Bender, Executive Director of the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center. “These funds will enable us to provide the building blocks for success, in school and in life, that can make a difference in the lives of the at-risk students who participate in this program."

The Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill must still be approved by full the House, the Senate and signed into law by the President.
