Rogers Announces Water Treatment Funding for Perry County
Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) announced today that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $500,000 to the Perry County Sanitation District for sewer system rehabilitation that will reduce the risk of wastewater overflows into the North Fork of the Kentucky River. Combined with a $470,000 grant and loan package from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Development program, the project is projected to cost approximately $970,000 in total.
“A modern, well-maintained sewer system is essential for improving the environment, public health, and economic growth,” stated Rogers. “These funds will go a long way toward ensuring the Kentucky River and its tributaries are clean for recreation and a sanitary water source for so many communities along this storied and scenic river. I applaud ARC and the Commission’s continued leadership in supporting important economic development, transportation, healthcare, and educational initiatives in rural areas. This is another important step for Perry County and our entire region.”
Not only will these improvements correct the failure of several sewage pump stations within the Perry County Sanitation District, which have resulted in undesirable discharge into the Kentucky River, but officials expect this project to allow greater capacity for new development. The rehabilitated system will also ensure more efficient operations, improving service for 588 homes and 100 commercial customers.
Throughout his tenure in the U.S. Congress, Rogers has worked to secure funding for water improvement projects throughout the fifth congressional district. In 1997, Rogers founded Eastern Kentucky PRIDE to promote Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment in 38 counties. PRIDE unites citizens with the resources of federal, state and local governments to improve water quality in the region, clean up illegal trash and solid waste that would pollute local rivers and streams, and promote environmental awareness and education in our communities. To date, Rogers has secured more than $187.9 million for these important initiatives.
Rogers currently serves as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. Through this role, Rogers supports important initiatives in the Fifth Congressional District.
