AARP Commends Dorgan/Stevens Bill to Make Do-Not-Call List Permanent
Letter Sent to Senator Stevens urging swift passage of S. 2096

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), this week commended Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, for co-sponsoring with Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) S. 2096, the “Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007.”  The letter stated: “We (AARP) commend you and Senator Dorgan for introducing this bipartisan legislation, which would eliminate the current 5-year expiration of consumers’ telephone numbers from the Do-Not-Call registry.”

“The federal Do-Not-Call registry is a powerful tool used by millions of Americans,” said Senator Stevens.  “I look forward to working with AARP and other consumer groups to eliminate the need to re-register phone numbers on the Do-Not-Call list by ending the automatic five year removal of numbers from the registry.”

Currently, each number in the Do-Not-Call registry will expire five years after its initial registration.  Almost 52 million (51,968,777) numbers will expire before September 30, 2008.  S. 2096 will create a permanent registry extension which would save millions of Americans from having to re-register their phone numbers.

Below is an excerpt from the AARP letter:

“AARP urges swift passage of S. 2096, the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007, in order to retain the purpose and strength of one of the most successful government consumer programs. ...We are encouraged by the Federal Trade Commission’s announcement that it will take no action to drop any phone numbers from the Do-Not-Call registry pending final action by Congress or the agency.  Therefore, a clear and irrefutable mandate by Congress is necessary now through passage of the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007.”
