Report Finds Diversity in Leadership at DHS Lacking

Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released a report entitled “The Department of Homeland Security: Minority and Gender Diversity in the Workforce and Career Senior Executive Service,” which examines the Department’s workforce and in particular, identifies inadequate diversity amongst the Department’s senior leadership ranks. This report marks the second in a series of reports examining the Department’s human capital program and workforce diversity.

Chairman Thompson issued the following statement regarding the report:

“Racial and gender diversity help to ensure that a wide range of perspectives are taken into account when decisions are made. The value of diversity has been proven in educational, governmental and social institutions across this great nation. The Department of Homeland Security is no exception. The makeup of the Department’s senior leadership must be reflective of the face of America. The Department must immediately stand with me and recognize the need for minorities and women within its leadership ranks and undertake vigorous recruitment, retention, and promotion programs to begin resolving the glaring absence. Securing the homeland mandates that we enlist the help of all Americans regardless of their race or gender.”
