Thompson Applauds $40,000 Grant Award for First Responders in Fayette, Mississippi

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, May 17, 2006

Today, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training announced the release of equipment awards to several states under the Fiscal Year (FY) 2005 Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). Fayette, Mississippi will be awarded $40,000 under this grant program.

CEDAP provides smaller law enforcement and emergency responder agencies with equipment items that will enhance and support regional response, mutual aid, and interoperability of responder equipment.

Congressman Thompson issued the following statement applauding the announcement:

“I am pleased to see the CEDAP heard our call and awarded our state with a $40,000 grant to equip, train and prepare the hardworking and dedicated first responders of Fayette, Mississippi. In this post 9/11 era we have seen first responder communities of larger metropolitan areas receive the much needed funds for their first responders so they can effectively respond to future threats of terrorism, but the needs of our small towns and rural areas have been largely ignored. We may not have to tend with the same type of threats that big cities do, but we face threats nonetheless, threats to our agriculture, water supply and other critical infrastructure and our first responders must be prepared. The Department of Homeland Security must continue to provide our nation’s smaller communities with the adequate funding they need to protect their citizens from future terrorist threats regardless of the size of the state, town or district they are protecting.”
