Representative Bennie G. Thompson Responds to Terrorist Attacks in London

“Our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes are with the city of London and the victims of today’s terrorist attack. We know the people of London are resilient and England has been resolute in fighting the war on terror.

“This latest attack should serve as a reminder that America and our closest allies face perpetrators of evil threats who will stop at nothing to inflict harm and pain.

“As our nations continue to remain vulnerable to terrorist attacks, we must remain vigilant—and we must plug up the holes and inconsistencies in our current efforts to protect the American homeland. Almost four years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, passenger rail and
public transit security remains an afterthought.

“Earlier this year, the Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee tried to get legislation introduced by Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton of Washington, D.C., passed that would provide the funding needed to increase the security of passenger transportation systems including light rail, subways, buses, and commuter ferries. Unfortunately, that legislation was voted down.

“The 9/11 bill directed the Department of Homeland Security to create a national strategy for transportation security. This plan was due to Congress on April 1, 2005. We still haven’t seen it. I would hope we can move on this soon to ensure that our nation is protected before such an attack strikes us here at home. The Department and the Administration must get on the ball and fill the gaps that terrorists could use to harm more innocent lives.”
