Notable Office Assignments in the House
Offices Used by Speakers of the House
Including the first Speaker, Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania, 52 individuals have wielded the gavel, including Henry Clay of Kentucky, Thomas Brackett Reed of Maine, Joseph Cannon of Illinois, Samuel Rayburn of Texas, and beginning with the opening of the 110th Congress (2007–2009), Nancy Pelosi of California.
The chart below lists the offices that Speakers of the House have used throughout their careers. Joseph Warren Keifer of Ohio, who had served for a single term as Speaker in the 47th Congress (1881–1883), left Congress in 1885, and returned to the House from 1905 to 1911, was the first Member to have served as Speaker and occupied a room in one of the office buildings. The building’s modern namesake, Joseph Cannon, never occupied one of its rooms—having secured Capitol offices even after he left the Speakership in 1911. Since the 1970s, Members who have ascended to the Speakership have continued to maintain a Member office in the office buildings to provide direct service to constituents, in addition to occupying official and ceremonial Speakers’ rooms in the Capitol. Office assignments provided are the numbers currently used for a given room.
