Akaka Votes to Support Senate Stimulus Package

February 7, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka released the following statement following his vote in favor of final passage of the Senate version of H.R. 5140, the Economic Stimulus bill:

"This stimulus package will provide much needed relief by encouraging business investment and putting cash in the hands of hard-working families in Hawaii and across the nation.  I am particularly pleased the Senate added provisions that extend the rebates to disabled veterans and senior citizens.

"As Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, I have had the great honor of meeting many of our wounded warriors and have heard the challenges they face after being injured in combat.  It is our duty as a nation to support these brave men and women and their families who have sacrificed so much.  Our disabled veterans and their families deserve to be included in this stimulus package.

"In Hawaii we have a strong tradition of respecting and caring for our elders.  This bill embraces that spirit by extending the rebates to low-income seniors who rely on small social security incomes to provide basic necessities and need financial assistance during these tough economic times.

"However, I am disappointed that the version of the bill that was passed today did not include important provisions to extend unemployment benefits and alternative tax credits.  I believe that these are important components in providing our economy and boost.  I am anticipating quick passage in the House so we can put a bill before the President at the earliest possible date."

The Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act of 2008 (H.R. 5140) passed the Senate today by a final vote of 81-16.
