STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA ON THE APPOINTMENT OF A PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION ON THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE

Senate Postal Subcommittee Chairman Urges Nonpartisan Cooperation to Preserve Effective Postal Service

December 11, 2002

"The mandate of the Presidential Commission on the United States Postal Service is broad, but its purpose must be finely focused to ensure the mission of the Postal Service--universal service at an affordable price.

"It is important that the Commission and its staff work with all members of the postal community and the public, in an open and transparent process, to guarantee that divergent views are seriously considered. As Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services, I urge Commission members to review the fundamental issues associated with the management and operations of the USPS. Attention must be given to providing the continuation of universal service; providing adequate funds for capital needs; and dealing with long-term liabilities while securing the retirement security of its employees.

"The nation's $900 billion domestic mailing industry and nine million USPS employees are at risk unless the long-term structural, financial, and operational issues facing the Postal Service are addressed. The Postal Service has made significant progress since the release of its transformation plan, issued at the request of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. I hope the Commission will work in a nonpartisan manner to build on our efforts in preserving a strong and vibrant Postal Service."
