Senate antitrust leaders ask for review

U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wisc.) and U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), respectively the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, called Monday for an immediate federal review of a proposed arrangement between United Parcel Service (UPS) and DHL.
In a Friday letter to Assistant Attorney General Thomas Barnett of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and U.S. Federal Trade Commission Chairman William Kovacic, Kohl and Hatch said the planned 10-year contract for UPS to become “the exclusive provider” of air transport for DHL’s North American air freight “raises important antitrust and competition issues.”
Those issues, wrote the senators, should be examined carefully by the Department of Justice or the Federal Trade Commission.
