STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA ON THE PASSING OF MYRON "PINKY" THOMPSON

December 27, 2001

Honolulu, Hawaii – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on the death of Myron "Pinky" Thompson:

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Myron 'Pinky' Thompson. He was a friend who was like a brother to me. He was a tremendous, caring, and persistent Hawaiian leader whose service made Hawaii a better place. His legacy of public service in health, education, and social services will endure and continue to benefit all the people of Hawaii. A true visionary, Pinky dedicated his life to public service, particularly to innovative and effective programs to assist the Native Hawaiian people. When I spoke to him a few weeks ago, illness had diminished his physical strength, yet his dedication and commitment to the education of Native Hawaiian children continued to burn bright. My aloha pumehana and prayers are with Laura and the ohana."
