WASHINGTON (26 Sept.) -- U.S.
Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Fla.) voted with nearly three-quarters of his
colleagues in the House on Wednesday, to express his support for
American service members and their families. Most notable was language
recognizing the service of Gen. David Petraeus, commander of
Multi-National Force in Iraq, who was recently smeared by the liberal,
anti-war advocacy group MoveOn.org.
The controversy
stems from two weeks ago, when the New York Times provided MoveOn.org
with a hefty discount for a full-page advertisement depicting General
David Petraeus as a traitor.
"While our nation's
military and their families are risking so much for the freedom and
security of this country, anti-war groups are seeking to undermine
their credibility to fit their backward political agenda," said
Bilirakis shortly after the vote on Wednesday. "I am glad that
Republican leadership was able to allow the House of Representatives to
make their opinion known on this terrible ad."
The
resolution, attached to a stopgap spending measure to fund the federal
government through November 16th, was offered under a procedural motion
by Republican leadership only after the Democrat majority refused to
bring a stand alone version of the bill to the floor for a vote. The
Senate had approved a similar measure last week.
